Life events and experience can have a deep impact on a young person’s mental health and well-being. Bullying, assault, accidents, break-ups, the death of someone close, and recently the effects of lockdowns can lead to depression, anxiety and many associated mental health conditions in young people who, before the life changing event, were for the most part contented and well adjusted.

These changed circumstances present unique challenges to the young person and to their family and friends. When circumstances change, many people look for someone to blame. This can lead to the young person or their family being ostracised from their usual social circles. People step back and turn away. Meanwhile, as the young person begins to withdraw, family members in particular need to find help, advice and support, so that they can respond to the young person’s needs.
